Event report: Special Exhibition Commemorative Lecture/Symposium June 25th, 2022.
This past Saturday, the 25th of June, Mita Campus’ South School Building Hall hosted non-fiction author Mr. Sayama Kazuo, who gave a special lecture in connection with our exhibition “Keio University and Modern Japan,” as well as a number of speakers participating in our Symposium commemorating Maeda Yūkichi’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Sayama, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021, presented the lecture titled “Where Did Baseball Come From, and Why?”. As he spoke, he shared in-person a number of items he has collected over many years of investigating baseball and its origins.
The Symposium, titled “Enjoy Baseball”, opened after Mr. Sayama’s lecture. Mr. Kiyosawa Tadahiko (pitcher in the 1960 Keio-Waseda Baseball Game, and member of the team during Maeda Yūkichi’s first term as manager), Mr. Ueda Makoto (former coach of the Keio High School Baseball Team), Mr. Horii Tetsuya (coach of the Keio University Baseball Team, and team member during Maeda Yūkichi’s second term), Mr. Maeda Daisuke (son of former coach Maeda Yūkichi), and Ms. Ueda Marie (sportscaster and former television announcer) spoke on various episodes related to Keio Baseball, and on what the phrase “Enjoy Baseball” means to each of the speakers.
Chairing the Symposium was Mr. Koba Takaaki (lecturer at Tokyo International University and Keio player during Maeda Yūkichi’s second term as manager) and Mr. Tokura Takeyuki (Associate Professor, Keio University Fukuzawa Memorial Centre for Modern Japanese Studies). Mr. Yamamoto Kenta (Former Keio University Baseball player, and Fuji Television announcer) facilitated the entire event.
